Dearest Brave Heart,

When you take a stand for yourself, or choose a side- any side- there are consequences. Have you given much thought to how your actions directly impact those consequences?

Yes! You can guide this ship.

If I had known this in a previous career, things may have been more easily tolerated and perhaps more pleasant.

We learn as we go.

Over 15 years ago I was sitting in a morning meeting in the newsroom. A manager ordered me to our second newsroom (which was about 40 miles away), to cover a story and report live for the afternoon newscast. I asked for a corporate car or a photographer with a live truck, which was normal protocol. His response slithered out immediately, “Take the bus,” he said casually.

Watch the video for my reaction, action and the consequences and learn three steps you need to know when you need to get strong and take a stand.

Being a bold risk taker is absolutely about being courageous but it’s also about being meticulous and making calculated moves. You need a plan to take on unfair treatment, public (and private) insults, and all browbeating behavior. Taking a stand can’t move us away from our goal.

And you know we need to get to the goal! 💯

Stand Strong,
Raquel

P.S.

The photo at the top of this blog isn’t a stock photo but an actual foam bus that was gifted to me from a senior staff member. Today, it intentionally sits near my office desk as a reminder…and for a genuine laugh.

To you, I’d say don’t take it too personally if you mismanage an attempt to fight for yourself. Remember you’re learning and growing and that we often do better when we know better.

Chill.
