Dear Invincible Friend,

You are untouchable. Unbeatable.

You probably have a remedy for the “What if’s” and “Should’ve’s.” Some days though, these worthless questions linger causing a mushy mind, and loss of time. I call them High Potential Blockers.

When I worked in TV news things were good. There was a paid vacation, a 401K and a brilliant marketing team to promote my work. Still, within this career were limits. There were restraints on my time, a high demand to be on call all of the time and I was going to make a penny over my salary.

I felt locked down.

I wanted something different but taking a risk didn’t seem to be an option for me.

This was my chosen career, I was progressing nicely. Comfort and fear prevented me from giving my dreams a chance to breathe. I would not reach my potential this way.

I shouldn’t rock the boat.

I probably won’t find another job like this one.

I should just be grateful for having a job.

I can’t start my own business.

It’s too late.

My internal chatter was unhealthy. Scary and little (if I needed a hip hop stage name back then, it easily could’ve been Lil’ Scary). I was throwing perfectly aimed darts at the courageous part of myself that wanted me to win.

But it’s the It’s too late blocker that hit hardest. Some of the rhetoric around it has been substantiated by the so-called experts so that validates it right?

Well, I didn’t listen. I left the newsroom in search of something that aligned with my goals. Yes it was hard (I was a loopy pony out of the gate). In time, though, I was galloping and winning ribbons. And you know what else, I don’t have that “what if I start a business” or “I should’ve tried,” hanging over my head.

No one wants that but failing to take action will lead us right back to a should’ve.

You may not be seeking a career change but something is banging on your door, begging for your attention. Be brave, answer it. Here’s a start to unlocking some stuff!

Mapping Your Potential:
How to Smash The “Blockers” To Do List

  1. Write down three beliefs you currently have about change. Be honest with yourself, are they Potential Blockers?

  2. Monitor your self talk about your potential, do you believe it’s truly attainable for you?

  3. Go to @2:40 in this video for a few BOLD questions on Limiting Beliefs.

  4. Review your answers to these questions daily for at least 30 days. Redo the above personal development work until your risk taking muscles strengthen and the blockers fade. You should be able to tell the would’ve’s, should’ve’s and what it’s to go play in traffic...permanently. You can do it!
