A NEW YOU. A NEW VIEW. Build a 2019 That Rocks!

“Anyone who isn't embarrassed of who they were last year probably isn't learning enough.”― Alain de Botton

If you think Botton’s use of the word embarrassment is a bit harsh, you’re still too attached to outcomes and how people view you and how you view yourself.

I can remember feeling humiliated for making mistakes on-air when I was starting out as a news reporter in Dayton, Ohio. It was my first news gig and I was learning on the fly. I was determined to avoid  making the same mistake twice. The embarrassment was powerful enough to prevent a second go-around. I had to hit those rough patches to move toward the potential I believed I had.

Getting to your goal and purpose is going to show you up. Feeling embarrassed might be one of them. Call them adventures, challenges, hardships or stepping stones but you’re going to go through it. The only thing that can deliver you or soften the blow is simple: learning and putting what you learn to use. We learn how to navigate tough terrains through lessons learned or advice from mentors. We are lifelong students. Forever learners.

I share more about my personal journey with Fox 8 news. You’ll also find five helpful tips to bring more joy into your 2019.

Limiting Limitations

If you’ve marked 2019 as your best year yet, carve out time to review any self-imposed limitations that have been preventing you from living your best life.

Find out what (or who) is in your way and make a decision on how you are going to handle the situation. Research and educate yourself on how the mind responds to limitations. Find a role model that has faced a similar situation and celebrated achievement.

Writing a $10 Million Dollar Check

Each and every day write your goals in the present tense. Envision yourself with the goal attained. Experience the sensation of the success, notice your breathing, your face, how you feel. Make it very real.

Just like the award- winning actor Jim Carrey when he told Oprah about the $10 million dollar check he wrote himself for “acting services rendered.” He post-dated the check for 10 years later and kept it in his wallet. He went on to tell Oprah about during those years he would drive through plush neighborhoods reminding himself that he has access to it all it just was a matter of time. He began to see himself living there or driving his dream car. If you recall, he made very good on that check.

Let’s put in the work, learn all we can, confront limitations and build on a goal-setting system that brings life to our deepest desires. It is just a matter of time.
