AUTHENTICITY & GROWTH

There are 279 days remaining in 2021
Dear Braveheart,
I’m learning.
Dr. Madeline Ann Lewis, President and CEO of Executive Women’s Success Institute and I had a chat. She is a highly accomplished woman with a deep rooted passion in helping women. A real She-Ro.
She invited me to be a guest on her talk show, sharing gems on Being Bold. I’ve shared nuggets on this topic before but this time I noticed something unique.
Based on the questions asked and our exchange of ideas, this Q&A presented a clear view on recent progress I’ve been working toward. I’ve been putting in the work, aligning my values and beliefs, creating daily rituals that bring me closer to my authentic self. Allowing vulnerability to nestle in when need be.
During our live session I felt a deep sense of peacefulness. I believe in being authentic and transparent, I was aligned with my truth. No pretending, no trying to be something that I am not.
By the way, I’ve tried pretending, it doesn’t work. The time when I wanted to be with the “cool” people on a commercial shoot and for whatever reason, when I approached them my voice went up three octaves, causing alarm to crews. Another time, I sat, uncomfortably at a table with business associates, whom I didn’t like (I felt like the rubber chicken I sawed with the dull butter knife).
So those days are over. If I can’t be authentic in a setting, on a TV interview then I don’t need to be in those particular settings. If I’m a fake, I’m cheating myself and the people in my presence.
I’ve learned that being the real you in your work is not only crucial but powerful. Authenticity allows you to be comfortable in your own skin. It helps you take risks, ask the tough questions and it even helps you while sawing through tough chicken at a stale meeting.
Without further ado, here’s the video of my interview. I think you’ll enjoy the discussion.

A RISKY Quote on Being Authentic
“I would rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I am not.”
