Happy 2022! Let’s start it with, no, not resolutions (do we really need more chatter on this?), but with grace. I wholeheartedly believe that goodwill can transform us into stronger human beings. I believe part of being a courageous leader is having compassion. How you choose to move through the world and make an impact will automatically affect others.

Last week a LinkedIn post by a recruiter, Jessica Wilbur made the hair on the back of neck sway. She was ready and waiting for a virtual interview. Jessica wrote in her post that the interview candidate was experiencing some tough technical challenges and time was ticking away. All of it sounded stressful and familiar to me. Jessica asked her LinkedIn contacts to have some grace with each other, sometimes things are hard (read what happened to the candidate here).

Jessica’s lesson on grace spoke to me and reminded me about a woman I met over twenty years ago. Joann, a soft spoken, brown-sugary skinned woman with thick, long hair extended grace to me. I was trying to break into the television news business and I interviewed for a job that I knew was out of my league. After the interview, Joann, the executive producer told me I didn’t meet the qualifications but she saw promise. She offered to meet with me monthly, after-hours for news writing training. She also gave me weekly assignments which included me faxing her three writing samples. She made corrections and we would discuss my growth in-person. When I finally landed a gig in the business, a big part of my writing style had already been developed thanks to Joann’s kindness and patience. I didn’t ask for it and I surely didn’t expect it but I remained grateful to Joann even though she didn’t live to see me write my first professional news story.

People who show you grace tend to stay in your heart long after your writing session or virtual job interview have ended.
